Kent and four of his friends are out on a beautiful summer afternoon, playing and exploring the immense stretch of woods adjacent to Kent's house. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, it's a beautiful day.
But then the friends stumble into a clearing in the woods they'd never seen before. There is a camper sitting in the middle of it, even though there are no roads going in or out of the thick forest. Curious, the boys approach the RV to get a better look.
They are about to walk into a nightmare that none of them could have ever imagined, for there is something dark and evil under the rusting camper, something cruel and monstrous. And it's hungry...
The Camper in the Woods edition by Matthew Blake Literature Fiction eBooks
A group of kids encounter a mysterious, rusted RV in the middle of a clearing in the forest. They quickly learn about the evil that resides beneath the RV.While the short story was entertaining, I thought a couple scenes ended a bit abruptly.

The Camper in the Woods edition by Matthew Blake Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
What's more fun than discovering a broken down old camper in the woods, that's what the group of boys think when they come across it whilst out exploring. However, this is no ordinary vehicle and soon the nightmare begins.
An unusual short story with a great twist at the end.
You know, I hate giving this author such a low review, but I think he actually appreciates honest, constructive criticism so that's what I am going to do. Hopefully this helps him.
I wish his characters were more believable and that he had done more research. I could tell this story required little to no research, which I feel detracted from its potential depth. Of course you could argue that theres only so much depth a short story could have (but still).
Again, this book was heavily male-centric like his novel Awake was. I would love to read something by him that had a really well fleshed-out female character that had an important role. Of course there are other qualities I'd like women to have in books but the main problem here in this story was that they were very peripheral.
This story also had a goosebumps feel to it. It could almost be said to be a children's horror story because the monster under the rv resembles the monster that every child fears is under their bed.
In addition, there wasnt much emphasis on description of the woods/monster/environment that could lead to a creeped-out feeling, which is really what you want in horror stories. It didnt quite hit the mark here and I wish it had. Lovecraftian themes to the monster may have made it much better.
My closing advice to the author as to how to improve is to please avoid being generic. Add some depth, and set up an environment in which the feeling of horror can grow.
P.S.
Upon further thought, I will tell the author what I liked about his story (because after all, if I didn't like anything about the story I would've given it one star.).
1.) It was a horror short story (I love the horror genre)
2.) It was a short and easy read.
3.) I enjoyed and was intrigued by the different perspectives of the RV victims. This part ended too quickly.
I'm not particularly fond of short stories but these are pretty good. This book is not what I was expecting but I need to learn to expect the unexpected from this author. He has a great imagination!
