A Ghostly Paranormal Horror Short Story
Mel has a curse she can see what’s invisible to most humans. We call them ghosts and demons. She calls them living nightmares.
When she was five, she had her own ghost. A good ghost. She swore to never leave his side, but over time, he scared her. She pushed him away. She broke her promise.
Now well into her twenties, Mel meets her old ghost again. And this time, he’s brought the darkness with him to prove his point…
…you don’t break a promise with a ghost.
Origins A Ghostly Paranormal Horror Short Story To Each His Ghost Book 2 eBook S M Boyce
Well, as much as I loved book one, I can say that I really was disappointed in this one. When you have a series and you post a prequel, the least you can imagine is that they are related in one way or another, as it is a short wait that of some brushstrokes to fill possible gaps in the main story or complementary stories of some of the secondary characters or something like that and based on his name, I really thought he explained a little about the origins of the story told in Ari.However, I quickly discovered my mistake, first, the story does not have anything to do with the story told in book 1, in addition the only character they have in common is a character less than secondary, is an occasional character who had an intervention of no more than 2 paragraphs, in both books.
Although the story had a good foundation, I think the author did not know how to exploit the true potential, more than a story I felt reading half story, the synopsis tells of a girl who makes a promise to a ghost and then breaks it by waking up the fury of the ghost, but you really do not see any of this in the story, if there was a girl, a promise and the break of it, but from there nothing more, besides that finally the ghost, who should have taken a leading role, It was small, with two occasional appearances along the pages and in the end not even the story is resolved but it remains in a kind of limbo, which really cost me convincing me that the story had really ended.

MY REVIEW
I read this book as part of my #yearofindiewomen.
After reading 'Ari', I immediately picked this up and devoured it in one sitting. In 'Ari', Mel was an intriguing character. I wanted to know what was up with her right from the get-go, so I'm glad Boyce gave Mel her own story. This is a chilling tale that pulls a bit on your heartstrings, too, which I think is important in a good ghost story. My favorite part of this story is how the ghost has depth and personality. It isn't simply a vengeful, two-dimensional character as they so often are in stories like this, especially western ghost stories. Boyce does a great job of telling a ghost story while making the monster human, too.

This story about a child who has a ghost attached to her was a bit scary. She promised her ghost that she would never leave him alone. Then one day she got angry with her ghost when she was hurt physically by him and told him to go away. He told her he would not bother her anymore but would still be there. He kept his word and she grew up and graduated and eventually married and had a son. One day she noticed her child seem to be seeing something and speaking to it. Yet she saw nothing. Her husband did not believe her and his solution was to send her to a therapist. She realized her ghost had come back and he harmed her again and told her he would send monsters again if she did not talk to him because he was tired of being alone and he loves her. As she is telling her story to a psychiatrist, she says her ghost has finally made her life quiet and lonely. The psychiatrist seems to believe her but she also sees a ghost by his arms and its an older woman who had been smiling at her. Eventually the woman ghost said to her "you are not alone anymore". That was so creepy to me how it ended. It was a good ghost story.
I chose to read this short story after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
This story is very short but still packs a punch. Mel promised her ghost when she was young that she'd always be his friend, but she broke her promise. Now she's in her twenties and he has decided that he doesn't want to be ignored any longer. Her good ghost isn't so good anymore...
I've always liked S.M. Boyce's writing and that's still the case in Origins which gives a little background to her horror novel Ari. I haven't read Ari yet but I'm going to have to find time to read it. I enjoy a well written horror story!
A chilling short story, that is too close to be brushed of as pure fiction. See explanation further down*
This story is skillfully told, with charm and allure. Making the reader at ease, the ghastly sensation that comes after a twist is even more prominent because of the surprise factor.
It reminds me a lot of the tales told by a campfire, late at night, aimed at spooking each other.
Here comes the major twist to the story [almost a spoiler]
*Children often have "imaginary friends" and in the 60‘s-70s‘-80‘s a lot of research went into this trying to determine the source of this world wide phenomena. Knowing that and that the research was left inconclusive based on that they established a presence but of unknown origin, this chilled me and rattled my nerves.
Many don't remember their imaginary friends and as an adult few talk about it. What the research did find was that by getting chastised by adult and told it don't exist the child's brain is conditioned to forget. So in a sense the base for this story is not so farfetched as many may think.
